The rigid nephroscope is an optical instrument which allows one to inspect the renal cavitary system and to perform different therapeutic procedures under direct visual control. Two models of nephroscopes have been described: the Wickham model (Fig. 2.3), with the telescope forming an angle of 130 with the sheath, and the Amplatz model (Fig. 2.4), with the telescope forming a 90 angle with the sheath. It consists of the external sheath and the working element. This contains the optical system and a working channel located in the central axis of the nephroscope, which allows insertion of the lithothripter or different working elements (stone forceps, extraction probe, etc.). The same axial channel also ensures the irrigation fluids flow. The fluid returns through the space between the nephroscope and its sheath.
